Characters

Here are some character designs I have done and then scanned into the computer to colour in Illustrator, by then putting them in photos I have taken I worked on creating shadow and movement.

Badges

Here is a set of badges that I created, I did this by first designing the image that would go onto the badges I decided on focusing on very simple and fun characters that would be in bright colours, I then arranged them into what the final badges would look like and printed them off ready to be made. I also made the backing piece of card which I decided would simply be stripes but that continued the colour scheme as well as the name card which again was simple but also gave the overall product a professional look.

Poetry Book

Here is a poetry book that I created using scraps of text from magazines and rearranging them to form a new poem. I then took key images from this poem to use as pictures which I created by on separate pieces of paper inking the different tones from light to dark, then scanning them in on the computer to add colour which would work well together and assemble them for the final book.

Examples of others work

I collected images of other artists work who have focused on creating small press books that have drawn my attention either through colours or the unique style and look that has been created.

Brainstorming

To the brief of creating a small press book I focused on creating a book that appealed to younger children so I came up with some key ideas that involved pirates, farmyards and unique  characters.

Once I had decided on the pirate theme I then refined the idea by focusing on what could happen in the story as well as small sketches of parts of the book like how the pirate could look as well iconic pirate images that had to be included in the book such as his ship and pet whether it will be a parrot or something a bit more unusual, such as a worm.

Here are some of my other brainstorm ideas

Drawings

Drawing people is a technique that I have refined and improved, I have done this by continuously copying out different people out of books in different positions, I did this because the people I began drawing didn't look quiet right and didn't fit the style that appeals to children where there bodies aren't quiet in proportion. I then focused on refining my final pirate character creating a very simple character that children will enjoy looking at and can still recognise it as a pirate. Experimenting  with how the pirate looks from his hat and his overall appearance.
